Greg Medford is a native Arizonan and an ardent American patriot. He is dedicated to hand-crafting and small-scale manufacturing as a part of the new Small Factory Industrial Rebirth of America. Greg’s early development was deeply shaped by his Mom being 2nd generation Greek immigrant and his Dad being from an old Irish/ American family that hails from Massachusetts, West Texas, and Arizona. The values of pragmatism, hard work, honesty, love of one’s country and treating people right were instilled early. Greg’s Greek grandfather, Christy Nekitopoulos, would get teary eyed talking about his love for this country. The trucking company he established is still family-owned and operated nearly 100 years later (www.acmotorexpress.com). Greg’s grandpa, Ferris Medford, was a scrappy West Texas American forged out of the dust and cattle that surrounded him. He was an avid horseman, and throughout his life he handcrafted fine leather goods for his peers in law enforcement. Greg finds these men and his parents as the principle influences of him being an innovative designer. His designs bring Yankee ingenuity, Western Freedom, and high-tech aerospace to an intersection of form and function that puts smiles on faces.

With a rich history dating back over 30 years, Benchmade is the product of many dedicated employees, a never-quit demand for excellence and the de Asis family’s vision and total commitment to culture, service and innovation. This is the story of Benchmade.
Les incorporated as Bali-Song®, Inc. and rented a small shop in a second story mezzanine in California. The original equipment was purchased from the owner of a manufacturing operation who was looking to retire. Utilizing the rudimentary technology available to him at the time, Les began building handmade custom Bali-Songs, along with Jody Samson, who ground all the blades. The success of these custom Balis spurred the creation of the first production Bali-Song®: The model 68.
Over the next seven years, the company expanded its product offerings into fixed blades and conventional folding knives, and evolving its name from Bali-song®, Inc. to Pacific Cutlery Corp.
Due to its inability to control quality, price and delivery, Pacific Cutlery Corp. filed for bankruptcy and was dissolved. In 1988, Les reintroduced a new company and new version of the Model 68; This time with a drive to produce product in the US and an even stronger commitment to product availability, quality and customer relationships. The company now needed a new name. While there was “handmade” and “factory-made,” it was “Benchmade” that described the quality of Les’ product. He was building an operation that made precision parts, but with hand assembly on the finished products. This was a “bench” operation and Les wanted the name to reflect the marriage of manufactured and custom. In short, it describes Benchmade’s position in the market- even to this day.
Benchmade moved from California to a facility in Clackamas, Oregon and began producing knives there under the name Benchmade, Inc. This was a major turning point, as the company was now located in the epicenter for knife manufacturing. Many technological advancements were now possible and Benchmade became the first company to own and employ a high-power laser cutter, allowing for work with steels too hard to stamp. The company also became the world leader in automatic knife manufacturing (still true to this day) and began to supply military units.
To respond to growing customer demand, Benchmade moved from the 15,000 sq. ft. shop in Clackamas to its current location in Oregon City, which sprawls approximately 144,000 sq. ft. today.
With its first ten years of manufacturing experience behind it, and by working with world-class custom knife makers like Mel Pardue and Warren Osborne, Benchmade perfected a business model that involved lending manufacturing processes to custom knife designs; affording a level of innovation and quality to the larger market that was previously unavailable. This eventually led to Bill McHenry and Jason Williams approaching Benchmade with the AXIS® lock… and the future of cutlery was born.
To this day Benchmade continues to focus on innovation, customer needs, responsible business ethics and operations to bring the highest quality products to the world’s elite.
Now more than ever, I welcome the challenge to continue our momentum with great excitement. We’re at a critical point in our business as the industry continues to grow, forcing us to really focus our efforts on the recipe that got us to where we are today. There are inevitable challenges associated with growth, but I am confident in our ability to learn from every mistake and continually drive ourselves to be better.
Innovative USA Handcrafted Knives ...
I am pleased that you have visited my webpage Quest Custom Knives. The launch of Quest Custom Knives in 2013 is the summation of a lifelong quest for innovation in American design, engineering, and craftmanship.
Throughout my 25-year quest as a master craftsman I have worked as a product designer, engineer, machinist and artist and have had the opportunity to create innovative consumer, sporting and medical products. Despite my incredible output of innovation, I was never satisfied – until the opportunity to create tactical custom knives presented myself when my father, an avid angler and hunter, asked me to build him his dream skinner knife.
One knife request led to another as my custom knives quickly gained reputation as knives that were stronger, sharper, more elegant, and innovative.
My goal is to design, engineer, and handcraft your dream knife at my USA shop. Wether it be a folding knife, flipper, or fixed knife, I believe a custom knife can be designed and crafted in the USA at an affordable price.
Each of my custom Flipper knives goes through my innovative and detail oriented 35 step process. Every detail is reviewed, checked, and refined so that each of my custom flippers have a great action, lockup solid, and retain a sharp edge for cutting.
If there is a custom blade length, shape, color anodize frame, or hardware option that you are interested in then feel free to shoot me an email.
When you see my signature G2 on your knife, which stands for my Initials in my name, Greg Goeckel, you can be rest assured every attention in detail has been crafted.
Thanks again for visiting my website, I look forward to designing and crafting your dream knife into reality.

Spyderco is an American cutlery company based in Golden, Colorado, producing knives and knife sharpeners. Spyderco pioneered many features that are now common in folding knives, including the pocket clip, serrations, and the opening hole. Spyderco has collaborated with 30 custom knife makers, athletes, and self-defense instructors for designs and innovated the usage of 20 different blade materials.
Spyderco was founded by Sal Glesser. The name Spyderco was coined after Glesser noticed that many high performance sports cars had 'Spyder' in the name; which inspired the name Spyderco to signify high performance cutting tools. The first product Spyderco produced was the Portable Hand in 1976, this "spider-shaped device", was a series of angles, ball joints and alligator clips that helped people such as jewelers and hobbyists to work with small parts. Spyderco's founder, Sal Glesser, and his wife Gail, converted an old bread delivery truck into a motor-home and traveled to shows. As they became more successful, they graduated from the bread truck to a truck and trailer. They settled in Golden in November 1978. The firm began producing knife sharpeners in 1978 and produced their first folding knife, the C01 Worker, in 1981; this was the first to feature a round hole in the blade designed for fast, one-handed and ambidextrous opening, which is now the company's trademark Additionally, the company claims that this was the first knife to feature a pocket clip on the right side of the handle.

Knifemaking encompasses an amazingly broad spectrum of styles ranging from the purely practical to the whimsical. Most makers getting into the craft tend to start with fairly basic, functional designs and, as their skills develop, get more ambitious and artistic. Jason Brous, however, isn’t like most makers.
Although still in his early 20’s, Brous began his efforts in knifemaking with the benefit of nearly 10 years of experience in CNC machining. His father owns a shop that specializes in the custom machining of high-precision components, mainly for the medical industry.
Jason spent a lot of time in his father’s shop while growing up, and by his mid teens was actively helping out with production. His skills and knowledge steadily increased and by the time he was 20 he was a seasoned and very competent machinist.
Jason's interest in knives actually began with art - specifically a style called “Bio-mechanical” - as practiced by one of his favorite artists, a Brazilian painter and tattooist named Lango. Biomechanical art (also called Biomech) is a surrealistic style of art that combines elements of machines and robotics with organic animal features.
Intrigued by this style of art and its similarity to many fantasy knives, Jason figured that knifemaking would be a natural extension of his metalworking skills and an appropriate medium for his artistic ideas. Although he had no specific training in knifemaking, in 2010 he designed and made his first knife - a fantasy design with a Biomech flavor - and eagerly posted photos of it on several Internet knife forums. Unfortunately for him, his design drew harsh criticism from some all-knowing keyboard commandos. However, fortunately for us, he turned that criticism into fierce determination which ultimately led to his success.
Through persistent trial and error, Jason changed his style of knife design to focus on functional simplicity, while still maintaining a strong artistic signature. His early successes came in the form of a series of stout neck knives with dual finger-hole grips. Fans of these “Silent Soldier” neck knives began asking for other expressions of the design. Since then, Jason has created numerous variations including a clip point version, a tanto version and the very popular folder version called the Silent Soldier Flipper.

Tri-Ad™ Lock for example, has never been equaled by any of Cold Steel's competitors and nothing they have produced yet has been proven to outperform it. Of course Cold Steel will always look to the future, constantly striving to make the world's strongest, sharpest knives. That goal as elusive and difficult to achieve as it is, has been the same for the past forty years.

Every day, a small piece of America’s heritage is carried around in the pockets of a nation. A small but solid reminder that anything worth doing is worth doing right. At Case, our knives are built by people with integrity for people of integrity. That’s the way we’ve done it for over a hundred years, and that’s how we’ll do it for the next hundred years to come.
Our roots extend back to 1889, when four enterprising brothers—William Russell (W.R.), Jean, John, and Andrew Case (a.k.a. “The Case Brothers”)—began selling handcrafted knives from the back of a wagon in upstate New York. John Russell (Russ) Case, the son of W.R., formed W.R. Case & Sons, as it is known today. Russ’s father acted as his son’s consultant, helping to stabilize the company's early finances while building a reputation as the most respected name in American cutlery.
From designs that tamed the American wilderness, landed on the moon, and defended freedom for our country, our knives have earned their place in some of our nation’s defining moments. And because they’re carefully crafted with the finest materials and twice tested for durability, Case knives are not only passed down for generations, but they have found their way into the hands of famous admirers and avid collectors, including some famous prize-winning bull riders, country music greats, and even former U.S. presidents.
Today Case is owned by Zippo Manufacturing Company, makers of the world-famous Zippo® windproof lighter, another family-owned business based in Bradford.

Our story begins in Vietnam, where members of a highly classified US special ops unit - known as MACV-SOG - carried a unique combat knife into the jungle on covert missions. Years later, in 1986, that knife inspired a young designer, named Spencer Frazer, to found SOG Specialty Knives. His mission: to reproduce the original SOG Bowie knife and pay tribute to the special ops unit that created it. What began as a single commemorative model soon became a full line of innovative tools - field-proven by US Special Forces, even honored as the Navy SEAL knife of choice. Today, SOG knives are carried with confidence into the most demanding situations. Forged out of tradition, hardened in the field, honed for you.
So whether you're protecting others or leading an epic hunting expedition, tackling one of life's everyday challenges or facing your most extreme conditions yet, lead the way with SOG.
** The SOG knife was designed for, and issued to, covert Studies and Observations Group personnel during the Vietnam War. It was unmarked and supposedly untraceable to country of origin or manufacture in order to maintain plausible deniability of covert operators in the event of their death or capture.
** !! ** Most fixed blade SOGs are made in Taiwan, while most multi-tools are USA-made. As for most of their folding knives, the better ones are made in the USA and Japan, though cheaper models can come from China and Taiwan. Many of SOG's less common products are made in Chinalike Tomahawks, throwing knives and battle axes.

Browning is one of those classic, traditional companies with a long, proud history. To get to the very beginning one would have to go back to 1805, to the birth of Jonathan Browning in Tennessee. Jonathan was the father of John Moses Browning. Like many of his time he sought a life in the West, which eventually had him setting up shop as a gunmaker and gunsmith of some note in Nauvoo, Illinois and eventually brought him further West, with the Mormon pioneers to Ogden, Utah. John Moses Browning was born in 1855 in Ogden, Utah, and spent a great deal of his growing up years at this father's side in his father’s store and gun repair shop. In 1878, with encouragement of his father, he designed and began production on what he felt was a superior single shot rifle. He was right. And after a production run of about 600 rifles he was sought out by Winchester Repeating Arms and soon his ingenious falling block rifle became the 1885 Winchester. This began a string of legendary products he licensed to Winchester including the Model 1886, Model 1892, 1887 shotgun, Model 94 and Theodore Roosevelt’s favorite, the 1895. There were many, many more of his creations that became Winchesters. By the turn of the century he was licensing his inventions to other gun makers and had already done his ground breaking work with fully automatic firearms and self-loading pistols – like the BAR, the M2 machine gun, the 1911 pistol . . . the list goes on - which are all now the stuff of legend.
Soon a licensing relationship was started with the Fabrique National Company of Belgium which grew into FN becoming the chief manufacturer for the Browning Arms Company. John made approximately 61 cross Atlantic crossings before his death, at the FN factory, in 1926. However his legend and his company have continued. The Browning Brand has come to represent “The Best There Is” in firearms and outdoor products, each year adding new innovations, launching new products, and doing more for our customers – essentially just following the great tradition of innovation started by John Browning. In the 1970s we added a symbol, the Browning Buckmark logo, that has come to represent all that John Browning valued. Each decade since has had its own successes with unique contributions to the legacy, and the last several years have been among the most successful in Browning history. Today’s Browning offers a broad swath of products for the outdoors person, especially with the power of both the Browning and Winchester Repeating Arms brands under our stewardship. That Browning is the maker of Winchester brand firearms is a twist of history that would certainly make Mr. Browning smile. The future looks bright for our legendary brand. With Browning playing a strong role in the firearms market over the years, we now are a dominant player in social media, with hundreds of thousands being influenced by our Instagram and Twitter feeds, and with our industry best 2.3 million Facebook followers. Today, Browning is headquartered a few miles east of Ogden in Morgan County. We are surrounded by mountains and are able to enjoy the hunting, fishing and plentiful outdoor activites found right here at one of the most beautiful places in the west.
The Remington Corporation and the knives that they built have had one of the most influential affect on the U.S. cutlery industry. From the time America was settled, to the end of WWI, American knife companies struggled to compete with Britain and German imports, but events that occurred during and after the First World War led to a great change in this phenomenon. Unprecedented opportunities arose, and Remington stepped up to seize the moment. In the process, they created some of today’s most prized collectables. In an ironic twist, the next World War played the greatest role in ending the company’s domination of the industry.
Preceding WWI, the U.S. knife manufacturers were having some lukewarm success in competing with imported knives. Most of the competition came from Britain and Germany. Knives made in Sheffield England were dominating the quality end of the business because of their tradition of quality. On the low end, Germany was the front runner with their inexpensive knife making methods. The events of WWI completely rearranged these circumstances. Many of the best Sheffield cutlers were sent by Britain to fight in the same Regiment. This turned out to be disastrous to the British knife industry because that particular Regiment was nearly wiped out in a single bloody battle. This event severely crippled the British knife industry, and it was never able to recover. Germany’s cutlery business was also damaged from the war. Like Britain , they lost many of their great cutlers, but that was not their largest problem. Naturally there was a strong anti-German sentiment following the war and most Americans chose to shun imports from the country. These events were tragic to Britain and Germany, but created a great demand for American made knives.
The Remington arms company was aware of the demand, and was more than ready to capitalize on the situation. As one of the leading arms producers, the company had been extremely profitable during the war. When the war ended, they had idle facilities that were no longer relied on to fill the high demand for war products. In addition, they had more than enough capital from their profits that they could build new state of the art facilities to mass produce high quality knives. Remington was under way by 1920 with a wide variety of pocketknives. They had a system that allowed for never before seen variations. The company would use a single handle form and make numerous versions. They used a single handle pattern and produced it with a single blade, two blades, or three blades. In addition, each pattern variation was produced with numerous handle materials. They even developed their own handle material called pyremite which was a plastic that was dyed different colors to offer even more variety. The Company claimed to have over 700 different patterns, and at their height was producing 10,000 knives per day. Soon, the great depression hit and the company sold out to the Dupont Company. Dupont did not change anything about the knives, but eventually discontinued the cutlery business in 1940 due to the undertaking of several U.S. government defense projects. The facilities that were being used for knife making were needed to supply the government with weapons of war. The company sold its equipment to the Pal Company who assembled the remaining parts, constructed a few military knives, and later scrapped the equipment in 1950.
Despite Remington’s departure from the cutlery business, several newer Remington knives are in circulation. Reproductions of older patterns have been manufactured by other companies on contract. Many of them are extremely collectable and are quite valuable. There are a large number of the older knives around as well, but they are usually well worn. Some of the more popular patterns (The bullet knives in particular) are among the most valuable collectable knives in existence.

An Innovative Past, An Ever Expanding Future.
In the warm Summer of 1962 a young Chinese blacksmith apprentice was spending countless long, hot hours in his owner’s shop determined to create better, sharper knives. Capitalizing on discarded and worn-out file blades as his raw material, he soon brought strong razor sharp blades to life. This young man was Bing Zheng, and his relentless pursuit of quality and design soon attracted the attention of the nation’s military. Bing personally designed and made each of his blades by hand. Those notorious blades were soon used by professionals across the mainland.
Almost twenty years later in 1980 the world was changing. China opened up factories to the massive new western market and business was going global. Bing and his oldest son Xiao Zheng saw their opportunity for success and started their own factory in Yangdong Guangdong and quickly became the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for many famous western brands. They soon began to manufacture hundreds of thousands of popular blades for companies such as Buck®, SOG®, Boker®, CRKT®, and Kershaw Knives® to name a few. Their standard of quality made them famous.
In 1995 Bing and his daughter, Annie Zheng and her husband Davis Zhang began a new knife factory specializing in balisong knives. This new joint-venture saw many years of market growth. Building on that success, in 2010 they launched the brand WithArmour® for every-day-carry (EDC), tactical knives and gear. It has been growing stronger ever since.
Staying true to Bing’s original philosophy, WithArmour® remains on the cutting edge of technology and continues to provide top quality manufacturing. The Witharmour® brand factory was the first to use wire-cutting on high carbon blades and vacuum heat treatment for an amazing finish. Their blade perfection is acquired with their digital laser and precision grinding today. Speed does not sacrifice blade quality thanks to their computerized CNC milling machines and physical vapor deposition (PVD). WithArmour® continues to invest in modern technology that can offer the very best in quality, design and efficiency.
WithArmour® also continues to expand globally into new product offerings, and markets around the globe. Today their sales are climbing globally in Japan, Germany, Russia, Italy, Greece, Singapore, Australia, Chile, The Netherlands, New Zealand, and in the United States.
By building on over 75 years of combined industry experience, WithArmour® is now positioning itself as a global leader in tactical gear and innovation. By working with in-house designers as well as professionals from around the globe, WithArmour® is expanding into more product markets every day. A few of those markets include tactical lights, cameras, hunting and fishing, tactical back packs, hiking gear, camping gear, watches, survival and much more.
