The Spyderco Roadie was born out of a specific need in response to the evolving security regulations for air travel following the events of September 11, 2001. Although the TSA’s plan to allow knives on airplanes was later withdrawn, Spyderco had already taken the initiative to design a highly functional non-locking pocketknife that would have complied with the proposed guidelines – the Roadie.

The Roadie stands as a refined and practical penknife, setting itself apart from its historical predecessors with its innovative features and functionality. One of its most notable characteristics is the “Double Dent™,” a pair of symmetrical dimples in the blade that allows for a fingernail-free two-handed opening. This feature not only ensures easy access but also avoids the accumulation of dirt and debris.

Further enhancing its usability, the Roadie boasts a subtle index-finger choil, providing better control during use and acting as a safeguard against unintentional closure. These thoughtful additions elevate the Roadie beyond conventional penknives and set a new standard for socially-friendly cutting tools.

The blade of the Roadie is crafted from Böhler-Uddeholm N690Co steel, a high-performance stainless steel alloyed with cobalt, molybdenum, and vanadium. Its sheepfoot-style blade with a full-flat grind delivers exceptional edge geometry, resulting in a keen, scalpel-sharp edge. The iconic Trademark Round Hole™ in the blade signifies its Spyderco heritage.

For added control, the base of the blade features a forefinger choil and the spine of the blade has jimping, both providing a positive, non-slip grip. Unlike traditional slipjoints, the Roadie employs an improved notched-joint mechanism to keep the blade securely open, while the handle’s full-length back strap, made from the same spring, ensures durability and stability.

The Roadie’s handle is made from durable fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) scales, contoured for comfort during extended use. The injection-molded scales are available in various colors, allowing users to choose one that suits their personal taste.
